When you first start using the quarantine interface, you should view this list on a daily basis and classify as many messages as you can. The Surgemail Spam Filter has a learning engine that learns how to deal with future messages based on the ones you classify as spam and not spam. The learning engine becomes more effective over time as you teach the system how to classify messages and as you set up rules based on your whitelist and blacklist. Clicking on an email displays the message.
Action Description
Release: Delivers the selected message to your standard email inbox.
Allow: Adds the selected message to your whitelist so all future emails from this sender are not quarantined unless the message contains a virus or banned file type. The Surgemail Spam Filter adds the sending e-mail address exactly as it appears in the message to your personal whitelist.
Delete: Deletes the selected message from your quarantine list. The main reason to delete messages is to help you keep track of which quarantine messages you have reviewed. You cannot recover messages you have deleted.

Quarantine Scoring
The Surgemail Spam Filter checks incoming email messages and rates them based on both the global rules applied by the filter as well as personal rules set by you when you select "Spam" and "NotSpam". The Filter provides a numeric rating, the higher it is, the more likely the filter believes it to be spam. Please note that some behavior, such as automatically generated emails, tend to be rated high frequently. The filter then performs an action based on the rules in place.
Quarantine Setting Description
Hold: The score at which the Surgemail Spam Filter quarantines your messages. If the message rates this score or higher, it will be set aside in the held messages section of the filter for you to review. Default Value: 5
Reject: The score at which the Surgemail Spam Filter returns the message to the sender. If a message rates this score or higher, the message is not delivered to you, and the sender is sent a notification that tells them why the delivery was rejected. You will not be notified if a message is rejected, and it cannot be recovered. This action takes precedence over Hold. Default Value: 10
Vanish: The score at which the Surgemail Spam Filter discards the message. If a message rates this score or higher, it will immediately delete the message. Neither you nor the sender will be notified of this, and the message is not recoverable. This action takes precedence over Hold and Reject. Default Value: Disabled
Enabling and Disabling Spam Scanning of your Email
If you do not want the Surgemail Spam Filter scanning your emails for spam content, you can disable spam filtering simply by setting the filter settings to "NEVER hold", "NEVER reject", and "NEVER vanish". While your filter is configured like this, all messages will pass through without any form of checking.
Adding Email Addresses and Domains to Your Whitelist
The FRIENDS-->Address List page lets you specify email addresses and domains from which you do or do not want to receive emails.
Tips on specifying addresses
When adding addresses to your whitelist and blacklist, note the following tips:
- If you enter a full email address, such as johndoe@yahoo.com, just that user is specified. If you enter just a domain, such as yahoo.com, all users in that domain are specified.
- If you enter a domain such as htc.net, all sub domains are also included, such as support.htc.net and test.htc.net.
- Mass mailings often come from domains that do not resemble the company's web site name. For example, you may want to receive mailings from historybookclub.com, but you will find that this site sends out its mailing from the domain hbcfyi.com. Examine the From: address of an actual mailing that you are trying to whitelist or blacklist to determine what to enter.
