Donate-a-Phone

Learn more about the Donate-a-Phone program and help against the fight of domestic violence.Donate a Wireless Phone & Save Lives

Everyday, 5,000 women and children become victims of domestic violence. Their most powerful weapon against this atrocity may be sitting unused in many area homes. The weapon is nothing more than a wireless phone. As simple as it sounds, a wireless phone can literally be a lifeline to a victim in trouble.

To help victims of domestic violence, HTC Technologies joins the "Donate a Phone" campaign to collect unused wireless phones, which provide victims with a lifeline in emergencies.

HTC Technologies will collect phones and related accessories at its offices at 213 S. Main Street in Waterloo, the HTC Technologies store at 170 Columbia Centre in Columbia, as well as its Swansea location at 12 Emerald Terrace. Customers with phones no longer in use may donate them directly at any HTC Technologies location. Customers will receive a donation form at that time.

HOW DO I GET A TAX RECEIPT FOR DONATING MY PHONE?
Bring your phone and any accessories by any of HTC Technologies' offices and receive a donation receipt.

WHAT IS THE GOAL OF THE DONATE A PHONE CALL TO PROTECT PROGRAM?
The goal of the program is to collect old wireless phones to expand the wireless industry's program to combat domestic violence. Experts estimate there are more than 30 million inactive phones in the U.S. This program is made possible thanks to the generous contributions of CTIA member companies. Since 1996, Motorola has donated over 17,000 phones and numerous wireless service providers have donated free emergency airtime to domestic violence victims.

WHAT IS THE DONATE A PHONE CALL TO PROTECT PROGRAM?
Donate a Phone CALL to PROTECT is a national wireless phone collection drive designed to provide domestic violence victims and organizations with one of the most powerful tools in the fight against domestic violence…a wireless phone. The program is a partnership between the Wireless Foundation, the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Motorola who have worked together since 1996 to provide free phones to victims of domestic violence through the program. Free emergency airtime is donated by CTIA member wireless service providers.

WHERE DO I DONATE MY WIRELESS PHONE?
After you deactivate your wireless service, place the phone, battery and charger (if available) in a bag and bring your phone and any accessories by any of HTC Technologies' offices. The Wireless Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, so your phone and accessories are tax deductible.

CAN I DESIGNATE THAT MY PHONE WILL COME BACK TO MY COMMUNITY?
The large volume of phones the Wireless Foundation receives on a daily basis makes it impossible to return a specific refurbished phone to the community where it was donated. It's goal is to provide every victim of domestic violence in need in the U.S. with a wireless phone and free emergency airtime. They are working with domestic violence organizations, police departments and other government and community agencies to provide CALL to PROTECT phones to communities across the nation.

DO YOU TAKE ANY WIRELESS PHONE?
Yes, please bring to us any hand-carried wireless phone you no longer need. Bag phones are not accepted. After deactivating your phone's service, please include the phone’s battery and charger. The newer phones in good condition will be recycled and distributed to victims. Older phones or phones in need of serious repair will be sold, with proceeds used to support the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and other domestic violence programs.

WHAT IF MY PHONE IS OLD OR DOESN'T WORK. CAN I STILL DONATE IT?
Yes, still bring it to one of our offices. We accept all hand-carried wireless phones. The Wireless Foundation will do their best to refurbish the phones and any phones that can't be fixed will be sold with proceeds used to support the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence and other domestic violence programs.

HOW DOES SOMEONE IN NEED GET A CALL TO PROTECT PHONE?
CALL to PROTECT phones are distributed to potential victims by participating local domestic violence organizations and police departments. To determine if there is a participating organization in your community, please contact a local shelter or police agency directly. For general information about involving your agency in the battle against domestic violence, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 or Donate a Phone at 1-888-901-7233, or visit the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence at www.ncadv.org. If you personally are in need of help against an abuser, please contact your local domestic violence hot line. They in turn can assess your needs of a wireless phone from the Donate a Phone program.

HOW DO THE PHONES WORK?
All CALL to PROTECT phones are pre-programmed to dial 911 and usually one or two non-emergency numbers like a domestic violence shelter. Free emergency airtime is donated by members of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA).

COULD I BE CHARGED FOR ANY AIRTIME WHEN THE PHONES ARE REFURBISHED?
No. We do recommend that you deactivate the service on the phone you are donating prior to sending it in. Phones that are distributed to victims of domestic violence are given free emergency airtime by local wireless carriers.
